I added Amalaki and Turmeric internally for sun protection after reading about this approach. I also continued using SPF 40. My melanocyte-stimulating hormone tends to be high in summer (I get very dark quickly) and this summer the darkening was noticeably less despite equivalent sun exposure. Small sample but personally compelling.

The neem oil SPF 1-3 data is something I have seen quoted in many wellness sites without citation. I would like to see the actual study behind this. In vitro SPF measurements for plant oils vary enormously by methodology and the numbers cited are sometimes from very old unpublished data.

Is there an Ayurvedic protocol specifically for sun-exposed hyperpigmentation that has already developed, rather than prevention?
The behavioral component, avoiding peak UV hours and using physical barriers like umbrellas and light-colored clothing, is the most undervalued sun protection strategy. The Ayurvedic emphasis on behavioral adaptation rather than relying entirely on topical products is actually better sun protection strategy than most modern sunscreen-focused advice.
